Frisco 4018, a USRA Light Mikado at the Alabama State Fair Grounds on
display since 1952 was relocated to Sloss Furnaces NHL in Birmingham, AL. in February of 2009.
Day before the lift, the Frisco 4018 is held above the rail for 30 minutes, just to insure safety
|

With the 316,000 lb. locomotive loaded onto a Goldhofer
Transporter, the 4018 was carried about 1 mile to the railroad, for trans-loading onto a depressed center flat car. The
transporter is shown making a zero radius turn to postion the locomotive for its next lift onto a flat car.

The 4018 has been secured
and inspected by the CSX, and is ready for it's 45 minute trip across Birmingham to Sloss Furnaces NHL, the new display site.

The relocation of the Frisco 4018 was undertaken due to the major redevelopement at Fair Park, which did
not include railroad history or a locomotive presence. The project was developed as an exercise by the Jefferson County
EMA, as a training tool for what would be involved for a disaster requiring heavy specailized moves and crane lifts. Historic
Machinery Services' role was the preparation, tie down on the flat car, the expert on hand for steam locomotive consultation, (
such as lift points and securement), as well as the co-ordination and execution of the move with CSX.
